I
have been the Web Master for the Kent Island Defense League (K.I.D.L.)
since the first day they went online in 2001. I designed the web
site from scratch, it started with a single blank page. It has grown
to several hundred pages, most of it is archived news stories dating back
to 2000. The K.I.D.L. is a grassroots organization that was formed
to supply information about development and other issues on Kent Island
and in Queen Anne's County.
From their web site:
" Our mission is to defend and preserve the environment and quality
of life in Queen Anne's County through responsible growth, to find ways
to maintain growth at a sustainable level, to educate citizens to
the process, and to make sure our elected officials and public servants
hear the voices of their constituents and are held accountable for problems
related to unchecked growth."
The first project concerned
an age restricted "Over 55" 1,350 unit development on Kent Island called
Four Seasons, on a designated "Critical Area" along the Chester River,
to be built by the mega developer K. Hovnanian. The Chester River
is a tidal river that flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The original
land use allowed 1 unit per 20 acres. It appeared that the Good Old
Boy's (and Gal) County Commissioners and the developer had put it on a
Fast Track. The land use was changed from 1 unit per 20 acres to
6 units per acre. That's right, 120 units on the same land that used
to allow only 1 unit. Plus the set backs would have been only 100
feet from the Chester River. On a Critical Area! Bottom line, the
3 Commissioners were not re-elected, but the Lame Ducks still voted to
push the project along a week after they were all defeated in the Primary
Election. Fast forward to May 2007. Governor O'Malley and Comptroller
Franchot personally inspected the proposed building site, and then while
sitting on the Board of Public Works voted to deny the wet lands
license, the last hurdle after 8 years. The Four Seasons story reads
like a novel, but unfortunately the story is far from over. There
is a link to the WBAL news item and video on
the K.I.D.L. web site.
Now there is a debate about
a Federal Training Center in Ruthsburg, MD. I am trying to keep the
public informed, as you can see if you visit the site. Click
Here if you would like to visit the site. UPDATE: The training
center has been nixed by the GSA. |
